You’ve given me much to think about. Good episode.
There’s one section I think might result in my losing some listeners.
The same people who ignore the disclaimer at the beginning, no doubt.
Okay, you don’t do wacky. I get it. I won’t ask you to watch Sharknado, but I can’t call it wacky. It’s ludicrousness stems from how seriously it takes itself. I think “wacky” comes in the form of films like Scary Movie where they are trying to be funny. But that’s the last I’ll say on this topic.
Your theory of the “one black character” is interesting and tough to argue against. Last season, there was a young black male who was friends with Ben Mason (the middle child) and this season had a young black female. The one basically replaced the other. Even though there is one other black character in the show, basically a militia specialist, the percentage difference is still overwhelming. That’s exactly how it was on Stargate,The Cape, Firefly, Alphas and many others. Then there are shows where anything other than a white face is difficult to find, such as Chuck (unless it’s a buffoon like Lester). If you see a new black face, you can expect one to be removed. Gotta love the institution. Anyway, to clarify my final thought for Falling Skies: I don’t mind so much that the story focuses solely on this group of people, but that it behaves as though the entire world revolves around their efforts. Walking Dead is mostly about Rick’s group, but is only about their survival, not how they are single-handedly fighting back the zombie apocalypse.
I know that you’re going to have an easier transition with the new Doctor because you grew up with an older guy. I still say, however, that it’s going to turn off a lot of American viewers and be a difficult sell (but not impossible). I wish they would’ve made a bolder choice and made the new Doctor either a minority or woman. The fact that you are a cranky old man has no bearing on my feelings here.
Have you ever watched Special Unit II? It’s not the most scifi of shows, but is basically a cop show where the investigators pursue mythical creatures. It was essentially Grimm 15 years before Grimm came along. Speaking of Grimm, this was only the second season, but it felt like they fell toward some really predictable story patterns far sooner than they needed. The show’s formula got rather repetitive, where each episode became a “monster of the week” squeezed into the bigger story of Nick and his mission as a Grimm. I will still watch it next season, but I’m not as excited about it as I have been.
Okay, this spring launched a new show called Zero Hour, which got cancelled after three episodes. It was universally panned, but my wife and I watched it and were glad to learn that the remainder of the 13 episodes would be shown later in the summer. It had a pretty convoluted plot where a group of clocks all over the world led to clues about secret Christian societies and it was ultimately about finding the cross used to crucify Christ and using cloning technology to extract His blood from the wood and start the Book of Revelations by cloning Jesus. This was an insane mess from start to finish, and simply awful television, but I loved it. CRAZY shit.
So, Riddick is coming out. Am I the only person who liked both Pitch Black AND Chronicles of Riddick? I think so. I also think I might be the only person who doesn’t think Vin Diesel is the worst actor since Roddy Piper.
